Frequently Asked Questions

General

What are composites?

Fiberon composite products are made from locally sourced, recycled materials and crafted at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility using only the finest raw materials available and the latest in polymer technology. It is this combination of high-quality ingredients and manufacturing expertise that produces the best-performing composite products in the industry.

What is HDPE?

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) provides superior physical and mechanical performance compared to mixed density resins (LLDPE, LDE and MDPE).  HDPE resins are typically found in more rigid products like drinking cups and food packaging.  The use of HDPE results in a decking board that is stiffer, more durable and much harder than other decks made with inferior grades of plastic.

What is multi-chromatic surface?

Unlike other decking boards that use shadows from embossed or molded surfaces, Fiberon products are developed with a proprietary process that injects more vibrant hues into the wood to create the rich, natural variation found in real wood like Cedar, Redwood, and Ipe.

How do I clean and maintain Fiberon decking and railing?

Generally, a broom or a blower will work better than a hose for removing scattered organic matter like leaves. Over time, the deck may become soiled. Once soiled, use a hose, a quality cleaning solution and a scrub brush or a garage broom to clean your deck. Scrubbing with the grain is best. A mixture of 1/3 cup powdered laundry detergent, 2/3 cup Tri Sodium Phosphate, 1 quart bleach and 3 quarts water works well. The secret is to spray it on and then leave it for 15 minutes, reapplying to keep the surface wet. Use a garage broom or scrub brush to dislodge accumulated dirt. When done, thoroughly rinse off with either a hose or sprinkler. Click here for full care and maintenance.

Can I power wash Fiberon Decking products?

We advise against using a pressure washer because improper use could lead to damage of the surface and in-turn, a loss of your warranty coverage.

Are Fiberon products mold and mildew resistant?

Fiberon products are resistant to mold and mildew but not “mold proof.”  Mold could appear if organic material such as a spill occurs, however.  If mold does appear, the best way to clean is to use a pump type garden sprayer. Add bleach to the sprayer. Do not dilute. Less bleach will be required if applied before the deck heats up. Spray the deck surface and KEEP IT WET for 15 minutes. Repeat application for stubborn stains.   Fully rinse the deck with fresh water using a garden hose with a sprayer nozzle.

Do Fiberon products require water sealing?

No. Fiberon products require only periodic cleaning with soap and water. Deck sealants are not required or recommended.

Are Fiberon products slippery when wet?

No.  The textured surface is actually more slip resistant when wet.

Will salt-water hurt Fiberon products?

Salt-water splash has not been found to be detrimental.

What if my decking gets scratched?

Just as wood-decking materials can get marred or gouged, the surface of composite decking can also be scratched. Horizon Decking is the one Fiberon product most resistant to scratches.  If scratches do occur, we recommend allowing normal wear marks to fade, as they will blend in with the weathered color. If the brushed side of the deck board gets scratched, you can use a wire brush and brush in the same direction as the original grain. In doing so you will expose the non-weathered decking and so will experience a color difference. Replace severely damaged pieces.

Will heat from cooking grills harm Fiberon Decking?

Not usually, but some composites do stain from dripping grease. Our new PermaTech™ Innovation provided unequalled stain and scratch resistance.

How do I clean off stickers and glue residue from Fiberon Products?

Use denatured alcohol and PVC pipe cleaning liquid.

How much ventilation is required under a deck?

For proper ventilation, an unobstructed clear space is required between the ground and the bottom of the support joists. Flat areas where standing water may gather should be addressed by grading or improved drainage. For decks with limited ventilation, flow through vents should be added at various locations around the rim joist.

Can I put Fiberon Decking over a concrete patio?

Yes, you can install Fiberon Decking over a concrete patio. We recommend that you use 2x6’s standing vertical on edge as support joists over the concrete. Next, fasten the decking to the support joists. Be sure to allow a 1/4" gap between the long edges of the deck boards. Drainage and ventilation are necessary for best product performance; therefore, we recommend shims to level the deck that allows a clear 2" space between the bottom edge of the joists and the concrete.

What kind of Fiberon railing systems are available?

Fiberon offers three different railing systems for easy, outdoor living – Fiberon Horizon™ Railing, Fiberon ClearVisionSystem®, and Fiberon Professional Railing.  Find out more about Fiberon railing systems.

What makes Fiberon Decking and Railing safe for my home?

Fiberon products are urea formaldehyde-free and no toxic chemicals are used in the manufacturing of products.  Products do not splinter or warp, protecting workers and users from potential injuries.

What makes Fiberon Decking sustainable?

Fiberon Products are made from locally sourced, recycled materials.  Over 31,000 tons of wood and plastics are also diverted from landfills and incinerators each year.  Products are produced in an energy efficient, virtually waste-free manufacturing process.  Fiberon products deliver long–term performance that requires no chemical preservatives, paint or stains that are common for wood decks, railing and fencing.

How do Fiberon products produce less waste during installation?

Fiberon products feature one or more unique features that can help contractors reduce waste by up to 15 percent per job.  Grooved (GV) boards come in a variety of lengths so contractors will have to cut fewer boards to fit, creating less scrap.  Fiberon products are more dimensionally accurate, reducing the number of boards contractors will discard because of inaccuracies.  They are reversible with usable surfaces on both sides provide subtle yet infinite color variation, eliminating color-matching problems when mixing different product batches.

Sanctuary™ Decking

What is Sanctuary Decking?

Sanctuary Decking consists of a cellular PVC (foamed Poly Vinyl Chloride) core with no fiber fillers and takes the wood – and its performance issues – out of the board, utilizing only the positive performance features of PVC.

What are the primary advantages of Sanctuary Decking?

Sanctuary’s cellular PVC core is surfaced with a durable, highly weatherable layer of a unique PVC alloy that eliminates edge cracking, stain retention and water absorption.  This alloy layer combines PVC and ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate), a material used to protect automobile bumpers and outside mirrors, for more abrasion resistance than wood-plastic composites and a cellulose free surface that resists splinters, warping, splitting, termites and mold.

What colors of Sanctuary Decking are available?

Sanctuary Decking uses a proprietary coloring process that uses a blend of light and dark hues to create natural color variations found in real wood.  For added realism, a photo-realistic embossing pattern, captured precisely from real hardwoods, is pressed into the surface resulting in a remarkably natural look and feel.  Sanctuary is available in two fade resistant designer colors: Driftwood and Ipe.

How does the color perform over time?

No messy, expensive sealants are needed to prevent graying. The initial color (darker than the final color) will lighten but not gray. The final color is very stable. The ‘graining’ colors resist fading better because Sanctuary Decking is high in pigmentation and has more UV protection than other boards.

What maintenance is involved with Sanctuary Decking?

Sanctuary Decking never needs staining or painting and is highly resistant to stains, termites, mold and mildew resulting in low maintenance.

Will Sanctuary Decking fade?

The color of the decking will lighten after installation, but the rich color tones of the product will remain for years to come.

Can I paint or stain Sanctuary Decking?

Generally, wood composites do not absorb or retain paint and stain as well as natural wood.  Fiber Composites advises consumers to test application of paint or stain before applying.  The rich choice of colors available in Sanctuary Decking also eliminates the need for paint or stain.

How does heat affect Sanctuary Decking?

Heat retention is greater in composite decking than that of wood decking.  Consumers should test the product in barefoot applications to ensure suitability.

What are the differences between HDPE products and PVC Decking?

HDPE and PVC decking offer many of the same benefits, like low maintenance, weather resistance and splinter resistance, but HDPE includes more recycled content and is more durable than PVC, which can stand up to nature’s harshest extremes, and is highly resistant to stains and fading.

How resistant is Sanctuary Decking to the elements?
