Easy on the eyes
— even easier to maintain

To help ensure your Fiberon composite deck maintains its natural beauty, consider some of these helpful cleaning tips.

Cleaning is up to you

Composite decking materials are pretty resilient. Sure, they get dirty, but all it requires is a little soap and water to retain that original ‘just installed’ look. Depending on your lifestyle, you may wish to establish a periodic cleaning cycle of once or twice per year. Should you skip a year or two and wish to revive the deck, no problem! With the right products the results are generally excellent.

Mind the “gap”

If the gap between your decking boards is less than 3/16”, it will catch organic debris. When fully clogged, this process results in water puddles and a buildup of organic material which is a strong source for mold and mildew. Keeping the gap clean is the easiest way to prevent this from happening. If your gapping becomes clogged, use a garden hose, a spatula or similar tool to remove the debris and help the deck maintain itself.

Dirt and grime

Generally, a broom or a blower works better than a hose to remove scattered organic materials like leaves. Over time, especially with kids and pets, the deck may become soiled. Once soiled, use a hose, a quality cleaning solution and a scrub brush or a garage broom to sweep it clean. Scrubbing in the direction of the grain is best.

Tannin stains

If exposed to the sun and water, tannin stains tend to resolve themselves over time. However, depending on the season, this process can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. To accelerate the process, the use of oxalic acid (wood bleach) or cleaners containing phosphoric acid generally produces satisfactory results. Please follow the specific recommendations of the manufacturer.

Oil and grease

Given the purposes and common uses of decks, grease stains are unavoidable. Our best advice is to avoid exposure and clean up greasy messes quick. The longer it sits on the surface, the more likely it is to soak into the wood fibers.
